Mexico 'must develop to keep up with new locations'

14 May 2008

Mexico must continue to develop if it is to keep up with the world's emerging tourist destinations, an expert has claimed.

Louise Oram, communications and PR manager at the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), said that the Central American country is "hugely dependent" on tourism.

This year, the travel industry is expected to contribute 14 per cent of Mexico's gross domestic product, making it the tenth largest tourism economy worldwide.

The country cannot rely on its traditional popularity, however, and must continue to offer new experiences to its visitors, Ms Oram said.

"With new emerging markets growing rapidly and undertaking massive tourism-related investment programmes, Mexico must focus on its long-term development in order to keep up with the competition of these new tourism destinations," the WTTC spokeswoman commented.

One of the main strands of the Mexican tourism industry is the luxury sector, represented by coastal resorts such as Cancun, Ixtapa and Los Cabos.
