South Africa 'continent's premier tourist destination'
13 May 2008South Africa is the number one tourist destination in Africa, according to the results of a recent awards show.
The first ever World Travel Awards Africa was held in Durban on May 11th and attended by high-profile VIPs from across the continent.
Among them was the reigning king of the Zulu nation, who made a speech to open the ceremony.
South Africa emerged victorious in the event's most high-profile categories, with Cape Town voted Africa's leading destination, Sun City named the continent's premier resort and Tambo International taking the top airport award.
The judging panel also concluded that the country is home to Africa's leading carrier South African Airways as well as the continent's top safari sites the Thanda and Shamwari game reserves.
It was not all South Africa, however, with Morocco's Palmeraie Golf Palace taking the golf resort award and the Conrad Cairo in Egypt voted the premier business hotel.
Sun International received the leading hotel brand award, while Europcar was recognised as Africa's top car hire company.
