Hotel group unveils plans to go green
06 May 2008The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled plans for what it claims is the world's first 100 per cent 'green' hotel.
IHG has dubbed the initiative Innovation Hotel and claimed that the future establishment's environmental credentials could set the benchmark for all hotel chains in coming years.
The hotel will boast a range of eco-friendly features, including solar panels to heat water, a roof garden with shrubbery to provide extra insulation, recycled glass windows and a rainwater-harvesting system.
All unused non-perishable food will be forwarded on to charities or food banks, while household waste and wind power will be used to generate heat and electricity.
David Jerome of IHG said: "People who do their bit for the environment when they're at home are likely to be interested in doing the same when they're staying in a hotel.
"Responsible tourism is about growing in a way that makes sense for business while managing our impact on the environment and community."
IHG owns 4,000 hotels around the world and is pursuing environmental initiatives at a number of its establishments, including the Willard Washington, which is entirely powered by energy from wind farms.
