Abu Dhabi targets global status
30 April 2008Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has plans to turn itself into a 'global city' over the coming year.
On January 20th and 21st 2009, the emirate will host Global City, an event that will focus on two pressing themes for the travel industry - sustainability and global warming.
Representatives from the Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development (ADCED) and the Urban Planning Council have said that the city's emphasis for the future will be on sustainable urban development and promoting itself as an international hub for business and tourism.
Mohamed Rashed Al Hameli, deputy director general of the ADCED, said: "Abu Dhabi's vision is to be a true global city - to be an icon in the region for culture, a leading financial centre and a major industrial zone, with a cosmopolitan population.
"Abu Dhabi will be a global city in spirit and substance."
The UAE has developed into one of the world's most successful and innovative tourism destinations and is currently working on a number of projects that are set to secure its future as a holiday location.
Dubailand will be one of the world's biggest entertainment complexes when it opens, with the first phase of the project due to be completed some time before 2010.
