An increasing number of travellers from the UK are taking holidays that combine visits to Singapore and the Indonesian island of Bintan, according to reports.

There has been continued growth in UK visitor arrivals to Singapore and Bintan over the past three years and both islands saw record numbers in 2007.

Divya Panickar of the Singapore Tourism Board told Travel Daily News that the city state is popular with Brits owing to the range of experiences that it offers and the shopping, nightlife and cultural scenes.

She added: "We are also seeing a growing trend in visitors who are choosing to twin their Singapore experience with Bintan, which lies just 55 minutes by catamaran beyond the shores of Singapore and boasts miles of wonderful white sandy beaches, perfect for relaxing and reflecting."

Bintan is set to boost its appeal to tourists over the coming years as it is developed as an integrated tourism hub for Indonesia.

According to reports from ETN Asia, the Genting group plans to invest in the island and build, among other attractions, a casino, a luxury hotel, hundreds of luxury villas and a health centre.
