Singapore launches world's largest observation wheel

18 April 2008

Singapore unveiled its newest tourist attraction - the world's largest observation wheel - at a special ceremony this week.

The Singapore Flyer stands at a height of 165 metres, exceeding the previous record holder, China's Star of Nanchang, by five metres and the London Eye by 30 metres.

A total of 784 people can ride on the wheel at any one time and 30-minute trips cost just over £10.

Lee Hsien Loong, the prime minister of Singapore, tested out the new attraction for himself at the opening ceremony and described his ride as "spectacular", Today Online reports.

He added: "We have a very beautiful city and this is a remarkable view of the city."

The south-east Asian city-state of Singapore has proven itself to be something of an innovator in culture and tourism terms this year.

On September 28th, it will be the location of a world first in the world of Formula One when it hosts the sport's first ever night race.
