Eastern Europe 'offers favourable currencies'

18 April 2008

People who are planning to visit Europe this year have been advised that the continent's eastern countries are the most favourable in currency terms.

John Nicholas, director of currency exchange service Travelex, said that the euro is making many of Europe's countries more expensive, but those that have their own currencies are still affordable.

"Destinations within eastern Europe which still have their own currency such as Slovakia, Bulgaria and Croatia are continuing to gain popularity with tourists year on year as holidaymakers travelling to these destinations find that they get a better value for their pound against the local currency," he said.

British travellers in the US are also likely to get a "good return on investment", Mr Nicholas claimed, as the pound has been consistently strong against the dollar.

According to figures from Travelex, the third most popular currency among British holidaymakers, after the euro and the US dollar, is the South African rand.

Mr Nicholas explained: "This highlights the increasing popularity of long-haul destinations such as South Africa and suggest[s] that people are opting to travel further afield to make their holiday funds go further."
