Dubai tower becomes tallest man-made structure

11 April 2008

Dubai's Burj tower has been officially named the world's tallest man-made structure.

The formidable building, which is being developed by Emaar Properties, reached a height of 629 metres this week, making it taller than the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota, USA.

It has been the tallest building in the world for some time, overshadowing the 553-metre-tall CN Tower in Toronto, Canada and the Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which stands at 508 metres.

Ali Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, said: "Emaar's Burj Dubai has accomplished another milestone in its development, placing the city of Dubai and Burj Dubai once again in the global spotlight.

"With over 160 storeys now, the most number of liveable floors in any building in the world, Burj Dubai is already pushing the frontiers in architecture, construction and engineering excellence."

The Burj Dubai is set to open in September 2009, as the centrepiece of the Downtown Dubai development, and is set to be yet another tourist attraction in the rapidly developing United Arab Emirates city.
