Travellers end up in wrong country
10 April 2008Two Italian women ended up in Germany after setting off on a trip that was intended to take them to Monaco, according to reports.
The travelling pair arranged to meet their niece in Monaco without realising that, in Italian, Monaco can refer both to the principality on the French Riviera and the German city of Munich.
A spokesman for Munich police explained to Reuters: "The problem was they thought Munich was Monaco."
The Italian women had driven all the way across the Alps to reach Munich from the northern Italian village of Trento and reportedly panicked when they were unable to find their niece.
It took local police over an hour to work out that the women, who only spoke Italian and Spanish, were in the wrong country.
Once the confusion was cleared up, the pair reportedly got back in their car to set off on the journey from southern Germany to Monaco in the south of France, a trip of some 840 kilometres.
