Munich prepares for birthday celebrations
10 April 2008Munich will be preparing itself to welcome an influx of visitors ready to party this summer as it holds its 850th birthday celebrations.
The festivities will run from mid-May to mid-September and have a theme of 'bridge-building'.
Various events, activities, concerts and parties held throughout the summer will therefore focus on connecting the foundation of Munich with the present day and linking different parts of society.
The Town Foundation festival will take place on June 14th and 15th, with art exhibitions demonstrating the diversity of Munich's cultural life being held in Marienplatz, Stachus and Odeonsplatz.
June 14th will also see an event that will serve to support the Bavarian capital's tourism industry in the future - the reopening of the Cuvillies Theatre.
Mozart opera Idomeneo will be staged to mark the reopening of the Cuvillies Theatre, which is one of Germany's finest rococo theatres and has undergone extensive renovation.
Other events this summer will include a special performance by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra on July 12th and the Isar Bridges festival between August 1st and 3rd.
