Snow heaps further misery on BA

Snow heaps further misery on BA

07 April 2008

British Airways saw its nightmare launch of Terminal 5 get worse over the weekend as large swathes of the UK were blanketed in snow, causing yet more cancellations and delays at the new Heathrow facility.

Hundreds of people could be relying on their travel insurance after the airline announced that there would be 34 cancellations at Heathrow on April 7th following the previous day's bad weather.

On April 6th, more than 100 services were called off, most of which were blamed on snow.

The weather system that hit the UK over the weekend saw some parts of southern England covered in up to three inches of snow and temperatures climbing no higher than 7C.

Heathrow was not the only location to suffer service disruptions as a result of the conditions, with both Gatwick and Bristol airports grounding a number of flights.

There was also trouble on the roads, with accidents reported on the M40 and M25, among others, and on the water, with the coastguard having to rescue two yachts and two motorboats lost in poor visibility on the Solent.

Met Office forecasters said the cold weather is likely to continue throughout the week, with occasional snow showers.
