New eco lodge opens in Australia

07 April 2008

A new eco-friendly wilderness lodge on Australia's Kangaroo Island is now open, it has been announced.

The Southern Ocean Lodge came at a cost of A$15 million (£6.1 million) and is situated on the south-west coast at Hanson Bay, where it adjoins two national parks.

Boasting ocean views, a spa, a wildlife viewing platform, a plunge pool and locally-sourced food and wine, the new centre is expected to appeal to travellers who want to combine luxury with responsible travel.

James Baillie of Baillie Lodges said that the development aims to exceed "traditional five-star expectations" by combining "design and nature, glamour and wilderness".

According to the South Australia Tourism Commission, Kangaroo Island is regarded as 'Australia's Galapagos', owing to its abundance of wildlife and 21 national parks, which cover a third of the island.

The location is also home to 30 vineyards and produces honey, seafood, cheese, olive oil and more.
