Air New Zealand launches to imaginary destination

03 April 2008

Holidaymakers can get travel insurance to cover a lot of pursuits these days, but a trip to an imaginary destination is not one of them.

This month, Air New Zealand announced that it will be offering flights from Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland to Tinihanga, One News reports.

Tinihanga, however, doesn't exist and the announcement was nothing more than an April Fools joke.

It turned out to be a highly effective one, as Air New Zealand was inundated with emails from some 3,500 people inquiring about this previously unheard of holiday location.

The airline's prank was one of many stunts played on April 1st, with coach company Intercity announcing plans to cross Cook Strait, the stretch of water between New Zealand's north and south islands, using a prototype hydroplane bus.

Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson unveiled a fictional partnership with internet giant Google, called Virgle, to build a solar-powered spaceship that would carry passengers on a one-way trip to Mars.
