Holidaymakers 'travelling despite tight costs'

02 April 2008

People in the UK are determined to take their annual holidays despite rising costs of living, it has been claimed.

Multicom, a technology firm that offers travel search engine services, said that online holiday bookings increased by 40 per cent in the first three months of the year.

This is despite tightening constraints in the form of higher household bills, increasing food and utility costs and soaring transport prices.

Chris Nourse, general manager of Multicom, said that in the modern world holidays are seen as something of a necessity, unlike the privilege they were perceived as in the past.

"Years ago, holidays abroad were seen as a luxury for the few who could afford them," he said.

"Now it seems they are being seen as more and more essential - even if people have less money in their pockets after paying bills."
