A Greek airline has highlighted the popularity of Athens as a holiday destination for Brits by introducing direct flight to the city from Stansted.

From May this year, Aegean Airlines will take passengers directly to the busy Greek capital where travellers can begin their sun soaked holidays.

Aegean Airlines commercial director Stavros Dalikas said: "Greece has always been a very popular, year-round holiday destination for the British and there has been a steady increase in the business sector in recent years."

Greece is a hugely popular holiday destination for British tourists, many of whom opt to go island hopping.

Athens itself is also worth travelling to as it contains some of the world's most fascinating historical sites.

Popular attractions include the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus and the Monastery of Daphni.

Visitors to Greece are guaranteed sunshine throughout the summer and many also opt to visit the country because of its tasty local dishes.
