Airport security alert causes concern
03 March 2008 A politician has expressed concern over security following an alert at Belfast international airport.Social Democratic and Labour Party assembly member for South Antrim, Thomas Burns, said that the alert, which involved an unattended bag, "caused havoc" for travellers on the afternoon of March 2nd.
At the time of the statement, no details had been released as to the nature of the alert - whether a genuinely threatening device had been found, if it was a hoax or if someone had accidentally left their luggage behind.
Despite the disruption caused by the alert, which could have left some people relying on their travel insurance, Mr Burns said it was "only right" that the appropriate security measures were put in place.
He added: "The security alert has caused major disruption for many people - including people waiting to board flights, travellers due to land at the airport, local through traffic and airport staff.
"I hope now that the airport is back up and running that all steps are taken to accommodate those caught up in the disruption and chaos."
