Times Square blast rocks hotels
06 March 2008 Tourists staying in hotels near Times Square reported feeling tremors after a bomb was set off.The small explosion occurred outside an empty military recruiting centre in Times Square, which is one of New York's major tourist attractions.
Fortunately no-one required travel insurance to cover medical costs after the event but people staying in the Marriott hotel four blocks away from the blast said they could feel the building shake.
Darla Peck, a visitor from Portland, Oregon, told the Associated Press: "I was up on the 44th floor and I could feel it. It was a big bang."
Terry Leighton, a visitor from London, said: "It shook the building. I thought it could have been thunder, but I looked down and there was a massive plume of smoke so I knew it was an explosion."
The only effect of the bomb was a smashed window and a shattered glass door, but police officials warned that it could have caused injury or death had anyone happened to be nearby.
New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg condemned the act and said that, considering its location, it was an insult to the United States' military servicemen and women.
