Snow causes chaos in Athens
18 February 2008Schedules of flights to and from Athens airport were thrown into disarray at the beginning of the week after heavy snow fell across Greece.
Many passengers will require their travel insurance in the country, with a number of cancellations and severe delays expected, Travel Weekly reports.
British Airways was one of the airlines affected by the weather problems, with its early morning and lunchtime services from Heathrow to Athens cancelled on February 18th.
The centre of the Greek capital was severely hit by the conditions, with up to 15cm of snow prompting closure of much of the public transport network.
In northern Greece, temperatures are expected to drop to minus 15 degrees Celsius, with around 200 villages cut off by heavy snow.
According to the Cyprus Mail, particularly severe problems occurred at Larnaca airport in Cyprus, with hundreds of passengers who had arrived to vote in elections crowding the departures area.
