18 February 2008Group of tourists saw the importance of having travel insurance to cover every eventuality when they were trapped by heavy snowdrifts in Bulgaria.
Sixty travellers had to be rescued by Bulgaria's civil protection service in Kazanluk, the Sofia Echo reports.
The foreigners, who may have been ski tourists, were trapped in three chalets at the foot of Bouzloudja peak on February 17th, according to the Zagrada website.
Strong weather conditions that initially caused the problems continued to hamper rescue efforts, with snow continuing to fall and winds reaching up to 72km/h.
A number of problems were caused by the weather in the Stara Planina region, with branches broken off trees and roofs blown down.
There were not thought to have been any injuries or major material damages.
Bulgaria is one of Europe's emerging travel destinations and it was recently reported by AFP that the country plans to take advantage of ongoing growth in the golf tourism industry.
