Sofia airport further disrupted by fog

23 January 2008

There has been no let-up in the problems caused by fog at Sofia airport in Bulgaria this week.

Eleven departures were cancelled on January 23rd at the capital city's airport as a thick cloud of fog made flying impossible, according to the Bulgarian News Network.

Several flights coming into the airport were diverted to the coastal town of Burgas.

The arriving passengers, who came from Berlin, Brussels, Moscow, Istanbul and others, saw their journeys delayed as they were transported to Sofia by bus.

Among the departing services that were disrupted were flights to Prague, Vienna, Munich and Milan offered by Bulgaria Air, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, showing the importance of travel insurance to cover trips throughout Europe.

The landing system currently in place at Sofia airport can only function when horizontal and vertical visibility is at a certain level, which has been made impossible by the weather conditions.ADNFCR-1337-ID-18438850-ADNFCR
