Beijing's first snow disrupts transport
11/12/2007Beijing has seen its first snowfall of the winter, which brought with it disruption and delays for travellers.
Holidaymakers saw their travel insurance come in handy in the Chinese capital as at least 100 flights were delayed and traffic jams formed on the city's ring roads, the People's Daily Online reports.
Snow reportedly fell until around noon local time on December 11th, causing most flights scheduled to leave in the morning to be postponed and delaying others due to arrive in the afternoon.
Beijing airport's traffic control department lengthened the intervals between every two flights to ensure safety in low visibility conditions.
An official said: "We are doing our best to appease the passengers."
Meanwhile, in another part of China, thick fog stranded more than 2,000 passengers at the Urumqi international airport in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region for the second consecutive day.
