Jet Boating

Jet boating, also known as jet skiing, is an affordable (and possibly more entertaining), alternative to riding conventional boats. Jet boats are often referred to as motorcycles for the water because of their design and their ability to operate at high speeds. But just like motorcycling, jet boating poses a higher risk of injury. Make sure you have your travel insurance with you.

Jet boating involves riding a personal water craft designed with a shallow draft that go at high speeds through shallow waters and near the shore. They can go as fast as 65 mph or more, and are made to be highly maneuverable for making fast turns. There are many tricks that can be done on a jet boat, including jumping wakes, spinning doughnuts, weaving between vessels, and radical change of course. Because of their versatile nature, they are considered a nuisance for some people especially swimmers, which is why they are banned in some areas.

Accidents involving jet boating are common, mostly because of how people operate them. Most accidents result from colliding with other objects where the rider is usually ejected from the boat. Injuries sustained from these accidents are similar to motorcycle accidents. A study made by the University of Florida shows that jet boating accidents cause more injury than any other water crafts. It shows that patients riding jet skis sustain more trauma to the chest, closed-head injuries, and abdominal injuries. Speed and improper technique in throttle operation were common factors in jet boating accidents.

Jet boating is considered a Grade 1 risk sport, with a low chance for injury. It is best to obtain travel insurance when engaging in this activity.
