Hurling

As a medium-risk sport, hurling may cause serious injuries. You should wear the right protective gear though and secure travel insurance so you can enjoy the game without any worries while you are on vacation.

Head injuries are not very common in hurling because of the mandatory use of helmets. Still, hurling exposes you to other equally serious risks. A study conducted in Ireland concluded that hurling players are at serious risk of hand fractures. These fractures are caused by blows from the hurley or when the player is struck by the ball. The face, which is the second most vulnerable part of the body when hurling, can incur facial injuries such as fractured nasal areas, lacerated eyebrows and forehead, damaged zygoma, and teeth loss. Ocular injuries are also possible. The ball or the stick can hit your eyes directly.

These injuries may seem less serious compared to injuries from other sports, but they can keep you from functioning like you normally do. Hand fractures can prevent you from performing simple tasks like writing, for example. That is why you need immediate medical care (and even surgery) once you incur a hurling injury. Procedures can be very expensive especially if you are in another country and are not protected by sports travel insurance.

Hurling is a Grade 2 risk sport. It is a good idea to secure travel insurance if you plan to go hurling during vacation.
