Gliding

Gliding is a great sport to try on vacation, especially when you are visiting foreign places. It gives you a great overhead view of the place, which you cannot get from traditional walking or riding tours. There is also the unique experience of flying in your own craft, controlling your own movements, and feeling the wind in your face. Gliders are sturdier than hang-gliders or paragliders, so it is also safer for beginners. However, it is not completely safe and you need to have proper insurance before getting on the craft.

There have been fatal gliding accidents over the years, mostly caused by pilot error leading to crashes. Mid-air collisions are also fairly common because most gliders occupy the same areas of lift. When not fatal, injuries can range from mild scratches and bruises to deep cuts, internal bleeding, and organ damage (including brain injury). Most injuries are treatable, but some can be costly if you do not have sufficient insurance coverage.

Gliding is available in exclusive clubs, most of which offer equipment rental and basic lessons. Some countries require warning systems such as a FLARM device to prevent mid-air collisions. Check out the site before signing up for lessons and make sure they have adequate safety and emergency services. Your insurance provider may not cover treatment if the injury is due to personal error, so clear things up with the company if you are a beginner.

Gliding has a risk level rating of Grade 3, which means it is a highly dangerous sport. We recommend securing travel insurance before trying it out.
