Dinghy Sailing

Dinghy sailing should be in your vacation itinerary if you are looking for an exhilarating way to view scenic spots. It is a good idea to secure sports travel insurance before hitting the sails, though, because dinghy sailing poses some risk of injury.

Risk is higher when you are manning the boat. Most injuries are caused by collisions with the boat's different parts, especially the main boom, rigs, and sheets. A study found that the head is the most affected part in incidents involving the upper body (32.4% out of the 39.5%). The remaining 1.6% involved the neck and the trunk. Contusions, fractures, skin grazes, pulled muscles, cuts and tears, lacerations, bruises, tender spots, callus, and blisters are the different injuries that you may sustain when in the vessel itself. The contusions and skin grazes are common in the head, while lacerations, cuts, and also skin grazes are often caused by up and down rigging.

You may also incur injuries even when you are not manning the boat. Several situations can lead to accidents – capsizing (because of the weather), slipping, and harmful harbor conditions (due to climate or physical make-up of the place). These accidents could require surgery or evacuation from a remote area. The costs of these procedures can be very expensive without travel insurance.

Dinghy sailing is a Grade 1 risk sport. If you plan to go dinghy sailing, play it safe – avail of travel insurance.
