Cycle touring

Cycle touring is a great way to enjoy the view and soak up the scenery especially in bike-friendly countries like Denmark, Holland, Germany, and Sweden. It is fast becoming a popular sport as it allows travelers to explore a place in their own pace. It is also a healthier, 'active' alternative to cars. Just be sure you have sports travel insurance to protect you from possible injuries.

Mountain bikes exposes your whole body to accidents. The head can suffer from concussions to fatal conditions like skull fracture and, in worst cases, brain damages such as contusion and hemorrhage. Cycle touring can also cause you to fracture your shoulders, chest, and legs. Cycling for long hours can also strain your back muscles and muscles in other overused body parts.

Cycle touring also makes your face more vulnerable to injuries such as facial and dental fractures. Your skin can suffer from lacerations, abrasions, and contusions (fairly common in cyclists). The genitourinary area (which includes the pelvis, rectum, and genital area) is also exposed to trauma during cycle touring, when you have to sit on the bike for prolonged periods of time. The abdomen is also vulnerable to injuries like pancreatic trauma, splenic rupture, contusion of the bowels, traumatic hernia, vascular perforation, rupture, and hepatic laceration. In worst cases, these injuries can render you immobile and may require you to undergo surgery. Without travel insurance, evacuation alone (especially from remote areas) is very expensive.

Cycle touring has a Grade 2 risk. Before traveling using your bike, be sure to arrange for travel insurance.
