Although the state is most famous for its wilderness and lake recreation areas, as well as the popular ski and snowboard resorts, Utahs capital, Salt Lake City, is also a well known destination. This city is the cultural centre of the state, with Temple Square as the Mecca for the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormons. Here, you’ll find numerous church buildings, square houses, and the North and South Visitor Centers, as well as enchanting gardens and statuary. Utah’s Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony are world famous. The Fine Arts and Natural History museums on the University of Utah campus are home to the states principal collections.

Bordered on three sides by tall mountain peaks, the predominantly Mormon city of Provo is also next to the expansive Utah Lake. It is most famous as the home of Brigham Young University, with its fine museums and architecture. The Centennial Carillon Tower houses 52 bells. Also of interest, the Museum of Art is one of the largest museums in the West and maintains massive collections of sculpture, pottery and paintings. You can find a good collection of dinosaur bones at the Earth Science Museum, while the Monte L Bean Life Science Museum houses exhibits of plants, reptiles, insects, fish, birds and mammals from around the world. Provo is also a good base from which to travel into the nearby Wasatch Mountains.

Springville is a charming town located just south of Provo. Here, the Museum of Art, which focuses on the development of art in Utah, is of the finest in the state. A great place for outdoor enthusiasts, Utah Lake State Park starts at the west of downtown Provo and offers great boating, kayaking and fishing. Skiers and snowboarders will want to visit the Sundance Ski Area, to the northeast of Provo, where cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking and fishing are also on offer.
