Philadelphia, also known as the ‘Friendly City’, was the original capital of the fledgling United States. The importance of this state can still be seen at Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was first signed. Another enduring symbol of freedom, the Liberty Bell, is displayed in Congress Hall. Other historically interesting buildings include: the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1805); the Academy of Natural Sciences (1812); the American Philosophical Society (1743); and the Science Museum of the Franklin Institute (1824). The other major metropolis is Pittsburgh, home to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the industrial heritage this name implies is now largely lost. The city now wins plaudits for its clean environment and its role as a centre for culture and education. This culture is showcased at the Carnegie Institute’s Art and Natural History museums, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Pittsburgh Zoo and the Heinz Hall for Performing Arts. Additionally, audiences can also listen to the famed Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Far from the big cities is quaint Lancaster, which sits at the heart of Amish country. These religious die-hards eschew all forms of modern life and are unmistakable with their distinctive beards and clothes of yesteryear as they drive their horses and carts.
