Getting There
Portland International Airport (PDX) services cities all over the US and many international destinations. Located next to the Columbia River, it is less than 15kms north of the downtown area. Amtrak trains run to the bordering states and beyond to the north, south and east, allowing you to see Oregon’s beauty from a moving window. Greyhound buses offer daily service to most large towns, with connections all over the US.
By car, I-84 runs east to Idaho while I-5 passes from Washington through Oregon to California. The state prides itself on its scenic drives, particularly along the ocean, and has frequent well-maintained rest areas.
Safety
Caution should be advised in some areas of the cities after dark. Also, if you are going hiking, ensure you take enough water and provisions should you run into difficulties. Due to the high cost of medical care in the US, should you have a mishap, it is highly advisable to take out travel insurance.
Weather in Oregon
Overall, summers are dry and warm while winters are cool and wet, but the climate varies significantly across the state. January temperatures are down to 3C and up to 19C during July.
