Getting There

The state’s largest airport is Des Moines International Airport. Many passengers coming to Iowa from overseas will be routed through Minneapolis, Chicago or St Louis. Additionally, there are regional airports at Cedar Rapids and Fort Dodge. By rail, Des Moines is on Amtraks Chicago-San Francisco route.

Travelling by road is the best way to see Iowa. I-35 travels to Des Moines from Minneapolis and Duluth. Alternatively, I-80 enters the state from Illinois, passing through Des Moines and Iowa City on the way to Oregon. On the western side of the state, I-29 enters from the Dakotas and Canada and goes on through Kansas City (Missouri). I-80 goes as far east as Newark (New Jersey), just south of New York City, and west through Omaha and Lincoln (Nebraka), and Salt Lake City (Utah), before ending in San Francisco.

Safety

Although there is little threat of danger in Iowa, travellers are often not as aware of their surroundings as they might be at home, and should take precautions. Additionally, driving through the United States can be dangerous, especially along long stretches of highway in more desolate areas.
