click here for a travel insurance quotation Information on Uruguay with travel insurance from Essential TravelTravel to UruguayUruguay, the second-smallest nation in South America, is frequented for its white-sand beaches and tango traditions of the Rio de la Plata. The country has much beauty and boasts a landscape of lush, rolling plains and low hills inhabited by warm and friendly people who approach each day with an easy-living attitude.Founded in 1724, Montevideo is a capital city with a European feel, showcased through its skyline of distinctive architecture, including designs of cutting edge and those following the linear rules of art deco. Take in a ‘Caminaturs’ (walking tour) to explore the old citys ornate foundations, historical monuments and well-preserved colonial buildings. Piriaplois is an hour’s drive from the capital and was the first summer beach resort to be established in Uruguay. The relaxed atmosphere of this town is protected by the surrounding natural barrier of pine and eucalyptus trees. Outside of the capital, meander down the 17th century cobbled streets of Colonia del Sacramento, lined by wind-weathered colourful houses. Take refuge from the Latin heat by spending time in the various shops selling local arts and crafts, or sample the local chivitos, an Urguayan hamburger speciality. Uruguay has mile upon mile of serene beaches for sunbathing and enjoying the variety of water sports. For a touch of glamour, head for Punta del Este to be part of the social scene and gawk at the stylish mansions of the jet-set crowd. For those hoping to find a more untouched Uruguay, then Aguas Dules and Tacuarembó are destinations with a peaceful guarantee. Both these towns remain loyal to local routines and offer cuisine and artistic crafts in their most traditional form. For heat lovers, the Arapey hot springs, located north of Salto, are the perfect place to relax. To truly sizzle, head for Daymán hot springs, where the temperature reaches 42C. However, it is the six hot springs of Guaviyú that are the most popular due to the high mineral count that is said to have healing properties. ' ' |
