click here for an annual travel insurance quotation Information on UAE with annual travel insurance from Essential TravelThe United Arab Emirates (UAE), a union consisting of seven sovereign sheikhdoms and hailed as the country with the most relaxed entry regulations in the region, provides visitors with an excellent tourist infrastructure. Formed when the British withdrew from the Gulf in 1971, the UAE boasts mountains, beaches, deserts, oases and camel racing.Dubai city is built along the edge of a narrow 10-kilometre long, winding creek that divides the southern section of Bur Dubai, the citys traditional heart, from the northern area of Deira. The city is famed for its attractions, such as the worlds richest horse racing track, its million-dollar lotteries, international tennis and golf tournaments, and a month-long shopping festival. Golfing is also a huge draw card and Dubai has most of the Arabian Peninsulas golf courses. Don’t miss the bustling Bedouin markets and the legendary duty-free shopping. The Deira Covered Souq has more of an Indian feel to it, with vendors hawking anything from textiles, spices, kitchen wares and clothes, to henna. The Spice Souq, also known as the Deira Old Souq, offers a combination of trinkets, clothing, rugs and glassware. Hatta, located in the Hajar Mountains, makes an ideal weekend getaway. Its main attractions are its relatively cool, dry climate, mountain scenery, excellent 4-wheel-drive terrain and its magnificent Hatta rock pools. Surrounded by modern shopping centres lies the largest, and perhaps most significant, archaeological site in the UAE. Jumeira, which dates from the 6th century, also has fantastic beaches, award winning hotels and sports facilities. The fiercely promoted Dubai Shopping Festival runs for the whole month of March and substantiates the UAE’s claim as the shopping capital of the Middle East, rivalled only by Singapore for bargains.
