More information for travellers to Turkey Boasting an exotic mixture of history, culture and scenic beauty, Turkey offers an overwhelming variety of things to see and do. There are majestic ancient buildings and enchanting countryside. The heart of Turkish history, folklore and commerce is Istanbul, which is a vibrant city on the Bosphorus strait, supposedly straddling the border of Europe and Asia. A main attraction, Topkapi Palace, was the opulent residence of the sultans from the 15th century. Another lovely sight is the enchanting Blue Mosque. The tangled maze of narrow streets around the Grand Bazaar is well worth exploring. You can also shop at the artisans and merchants shops in Uzunçarsi Caddesi, which are worth a visit. The charming colonial suburb of Istiklal Caddesi has an array of restaurants serving local cuisine. Ankara, Turkeys capital, is spread across the Central Anatolian steppe. Attractions include Hisar, the Byzantine citadel east of the old city; the Museum of Anatolian Civilsations; and Atatürks mausoleum. Additionally, the Presidential Mansion is well preserved. The ancient Roman ruins scattered around the city are also fascinating. Ephesus is a very well preserved city on the Mediterranean coast. Ionias Temple of Diana is a leading attraction, while a walking tour of the citys ancient ruins takes visitors past the massive Harbour Gymnasium, the legendary Grotto of the Seven Sleepers, and the marble-paved Arcadian Way. Located on Turkeys southern coast, Antalya boasts lengthy stretches of pebble beaches and an historic Roman-Ottoman core. It also serves as an excellent base from which to explore the less crowded beach towns and other ancient villages of the region. The historic battlefields of Gallipoli were the sites of a tragically fated landing attempt in which thousands of mostly Australian and New Zealand soldiers los their lives in WWI. Today, however, the area is full of peaceful farmlands and lovely forests. In March, the region is filled with tourists during the annual commemoration. Turkeys landscape is lush and scenic. The Aktepe Valleys in northern Cappadocia have the most impressive volcanic cones in the district. Riddled with mysterious tunnels, the rocky outcrop of Kale is located in Uçhisar in southwestern Turkey. The pleasant route through Dovecote Valley takes you to Göreme, where nesting birds live in the rock faces. One of the oldest inhabited spots in the world, Harran is located in Kurdish southeastern Anatolia and is surrounded by crumbling walls and ancient ruins. An impressive stone fortress rests on the eastern side of the town, while the 8th century Ulu Cami mosque boasts fine mosaics. Also worth a visit, Troy is the excavated site of nine ancient cities dating back to 3000 BC. On the western coast of Turkey, Bodrum is the South Aegeans prettiest resort, offering a port served by ferries from the Greek island of Kos. ' ' |
