More information for travellers to Tanzania From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the white-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania is a country of awe-inspiring natural beauty and abundant wildlife. The country’s wondrous environmental attributes, along with a stable political situation, well-organised urban centres and magically friendly people, make it one of Africa’s most enticing holiday destinations. Tanzania’s most important centre, Dar-es-Salaam, is situated in a central location on the coast, and despite its global influences – Eastern, German and British – is primarily a Swahili city, with immensely warm and welcoming locals. The Botanical Gardens, conveniently placed adjacent to the city centre, are a serene respite from the daily bustle of urban life and are filled with lush indigenous vegetation. Just across the road from the Gardens is the National Museum, housing fascinating cultural and historical exhibits. For those craving some authentic insight into the everyday lives of Tanzanian people, a visit to Kariokoo Market is a must. This powerfully atmospheric market is a jumble of crowds and vendors, with everything on sale from fresh produce to traditional remedies. Mount Kilimanjaro, perhaps Tanzania’s most iconic attraction, is Africa’s highest peak, a dormant volcano that, despite its equatorial positioning, has an apex blanketed with snow. The mountain is covered with dense rainforest vegetation and alpine meadows where abundant plant and animal life can be found, and is surrounded by the protected area of the Kilimanjaro National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time of the year, with most mountaineers taking around three days to reach the summit. The expansive savannah and forested plains of the Serengeti National Park stretch across an area of 14,763 square kilometres, and are home to the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa. In its entirety, the park is said to provide sanctuary to approximately four million birds and animals, all of which have free range of this massive area. The vast area of the park, and the power of instinct possessed by its animal inhabitants, results in a colossal migration into Kenya that usually begins around May, and involves over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area extends from Lake Natron, the breeding ground of East Africa’s flamingos, to Lake Manyara to the east and Lake Enyasi in the south. The region contains the Ol-Ndoinyo volcano, a still-active peak that last erupted in 1983, and the Ngorongoro, the largest unbroken caldera in the world, created by the collapsed cone of the volcanic mountain. The crater is home to enormous quantities of wild game and birds, including the rare black rhinoceros. The Zanzibar Archipelago is but a short trip away from the Tanzanian mainland, and lures countless travellers annually with its exotic reputation and the promise of azure waters and tropical beaches. The archipelago includes the famous Zanzibar Island, but also encompasses less travelled areas such as Pemba in the north and a myriad of tiny islets. ' ' |
