Once a small fishing port, Ascona is now a popular resort. Additionally, it is the perfect base from which to discover the beaches of Le Marche. At the summit of the hill lies the city’s best known landmark, the medieval cathedral of San Ciriaco. Inside, the cathedral is interior is decorated with Byzantine art and houses a pagan temple within its crypt. Nearby, the 19th century Teatro delle Muse and the art gallery in the Palazzo Bosdari are also worth seeing. Located off Via Cappelleis Coliegio Pontificio Papio, dating from 1584and features one of the most beautiful Renaissance courtyards in Switzerland. Also of interestis Casa Serodine (also called Casa Borrani), which was constructed in 1620 and has one of the most richly embellished façades of any secular structure in the nation. Museo Comunale dArte Moderna offers changing exhibitions of modern art, as well as a permanent collection boasting works by Klee and Utrillo. Out and about in AsconaIsole di Brissago is just off the shore of Lake Maggiore. It is home to a botanical garden of Mediterranean and subtropical flora, and can be reached by boat from the centre of Ascona in just 10 minutes. Also of interest is the small village of Ronco, which is just 18kms away. Erich Maria Remarque, the German author of All Quiet on the Western Front, lived here and is buried in the cemetery of the tiny church. Many visitors also like to see the resort town of Locarno, just four kilometres from Ascona. Alternatively, Mount Conero is also nearby to the south and contains three resort towns, including the pretty seaside village of Sirolo with its medieval centre, Roman ruins and pristine beach. Farther afield, Lugano boasts fine culture, old cobbled lanes, as well as an array of vibrant water sports on the lake. Leisure OptionsAscona is pretty sedate and you’ll have to go to nearby Lugano for a vibrant night scene. However, there are a few good bars in Ascona for those who are content with a quiet evening. Local residents of the area are big meat eaters and many of Anconas restaurants specialise in tasty grilled dishes. SafetyAscona is an excellent holiday destination, but visitors should always try to remain alert to possible dangers. Driving can place you at a greater risk of having an accident.
