A progressive attitude towards wildlife has endowed Swaziland with a striking collection of national parks and game reserves.Situated among the Dlangeni Hills, Mbabane lies at the northern end of the Ezulwini Valley. It has it’s pockets of charm but is otherwise of little interest to the visitor. The main attractions in Mbabane are the Mall and Allister Miller street and the Swazi Plaza, which houses the tourist office, and offers good shopping in a modern complex. To witness the pomp and ceremony of an African King, find your ay to the Royal Kraal at Lobamba. If your timing is right oyu might witness the Incwala ceremony and the Uhmlanga dance. The national musum is also located here. The main reason people come to Swaziland is for game watching and Mlilwane is a private game reserve on the border of the high- and middle-‘veld’, and is the oldest and most visited of Swaziland’s parks. Animals that can be found in this park include zebra, giraffe, many different antelope, crocodile, hippo and a variety of birdlife. Walking, cycling and horse riding is permitted in the reserve and there are many vehicle and walking trails. Mkhaya Game Reserve has always been popular with hunters for its wildlife, and the reserve boasts that you are more likely to see wild black rhinos here than anywhere else in Africa. In the hilly northwest, approximately 30kms north of Mbabane, lies Malolotja Reserve. The reserve, which takes its name from Swazilands highest waterfall, protects 18,000 hectares of pristine wilderness and is home to more than 280 bird species, some rare ones included. Swaziland is also well placed for visits to the famous Kruger Park and Hluhluwe (pronouned: Shooshluwee) game park near the lovely northern Kwa-zulu Natal coast. ' ' |
