The island is split and has been ruled for over 350 years by both the French and the Dutch. Regardless of which flag is flying, both sides of the island are graced with calm waters, pristine beaches, and top quality resorts ready to welcome all those that visit. The island has 36 beaches to explore, each with its own different ambience to satisfy everyone, from the water sports fiends to the honeymoon recluses. Cupecoy Bay, with its long, clean white sands and secluded coves, is locally rated as the most stunning of St Maartens beaches. On the Dutch side of the island, Dawn Beach is a close contender for the same title with its serene stillness – even the turquoise waters here lap quietly. The capital city of Marigot is stamped with French passion, more so than any other Caribbean city, and features the cuisine to match. Close to Marigot stands the dominating Fort St Louis, the most famed historical monument in St Maarten. Built in 1767 originally as a brick protector for the town, it nowadays entices tourists to take a steep climb for the stunning panoramic views from the top. For those seeking a challenge, Paradise Peak is located at the centre of the island. The two observation decks are perfect for taking in the vast tropical forest that sits below. A rich, green valley that is surrounded by low, rolling hills adorned with lush tropical vegetation, it is a beautiful place to enjoy nature up close and in peace. At the northern tip of the island is Grand Case, an immense beach that is home to a popular fishing village internationally known for its fine traditional cuisine. Fairytale charm seems to have inspired the local architecture as the streets are filled with pastel coloured homes that stand steady against the weathering sea breeze. To escape the quaint, head to Long (Longue) Bay, which as the name suggests is one of the longest bays on the island. It provides more than enough space for the exclusive resorts that entertain and offer a perfect place to relax in the sun. ' ' |
