Famous for its paradise-defining beaches and West Indian good times that include spontaneous street ‘jump-ups’, rum punch, delicious seafood and reggae, St Lucia is a popular place to relax in the Caribbean sunshine.Despite being only 43kms long, St Lucia has some of the most famous shores and beautiful reefs of the region, making it a perfect holiday destination. Away from the beaches, the island’s magnificent rainforest is perfect for hiking. You can make your way through the tropical vegetation while trying to spot the endangered St Lucia parrot. Located near Soufriere are the spectacular Petit Piton and Gros Piton, both surrounded by thrashing waves. Only the more daring climbers scale the volcanic spires, however, the world’s only drive-in volcanic crater, also located here, satisfies the more sedate thrill-seekers. Castries, the pretty capital, boasts a fine harbour and is a prime spot for seafood lovers. The island’s fusion of French Creole and British influences can be found in the city’s winding streets and taken home in the form of local souvenirs of jewellery and handicrafts. St Lucia instantly seduces with its palm-lined shores; Marigot Bay showcases the St Lucia beach standard with a perfect picture-postcard scene. Closed in by rich, green hills, the harbour is a hub of the sailing elite, with awesome yachts moored for the season. The black-sand shore of Anse Chastenet lays claim to being one of the best underwater spots in the Caribbean; both divers and snorkellers will be in awe as they swim with the rainbow-coloured sea creatures. Relaxation is hard to escape on this island, yet Diamond Falls will do its best to invigorate. Provided with bathhouses built during the reign of King Louis XVI, the natural mineral-rich, colour-changing waters are a refreshing way to recharge your energy levels as they are claimed to have healing powers.
