Travel to Valencia

Spain’s third-largest city lies in a great location very near to the beautiful Costa Blanca. Although Valencia is steeped in history with its charming old quarter, the city is also modern, with great shopping, dining and entertainment options.

Getting there

Valencia’s Manises Airport lies just outside the city limits and receives flights from most European and domestic cities. There is a rail terminal outside the airport which links to the city centre within minutes. Shuttle buses and taxis are also on hand. For those travelling by car, the A-7/E-15 European highway runs north-south, bypassing the city, with the N-221 approaching Valencia from the north, and the N-430 from the south. Valencia receives direct trains from both Madrid and Barcelona; Talgo 200 and AVE trains are the fastest. Buses from Madrid are somewhat infrequent and unreliable.

Information on Valencias key attractions

One of Valencia’s most appealing attractions is the Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas, with its extravagantly sculptured façade and interior. The imposing neoclassical cathedral guards the supposed Holy Grail and has spectacular views of the city from its impressive Miguelete, an octagonal bell tower. The town was made for strolling and the centre is full of grand plazas and wide tree-lined boulevards. Stop off at the Museo de Bellas Artes, famed for its collection by Spanish painters. On the museum theme, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is a futuristic entertainment complex dedicated to the arts and science. Away from the bustle of the city are some pretty parks and gardens.

Out and about

There is much to see by car. The Costa Blanca’s favourite and most scenic resorts are to the south, and include beautiful Denia and Javea with their spectacular coastlines and charming old towns. Benidorm offers a party atmosphere centred on the seafront; while Alicante is a very Spanish town with top-rate historical buildings and bustling promenades. Heading inland are the enchanting towns of Morella and Mirambel.

Leisure options

Valencia is loaded with stylish and fashionable boutiques and trendy little stores selling everything from expensive jewellery to designer labels. Dining options are numerous and varied, ranging from paella joints to some quality international restaurants. The spring festival, Las Fallas, is a huge annual party with ritual effigy burning and bullfights.

Safety

Tourists are more susceptible to dangers and annoyances when on holiday and should be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas. Driving is a potential hazard and visitors should remain vigilant. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for yourself and your family.

Weather in Valencia

Valencia has a reliably balmy climate which makes it pleasant to visit all year round. The winters are mild and temperate with the temperature not dropping below 10C. In summer the average temperature is around 24C and you can expect endless blue skies and hot, sunny weather.
