Travel to Costa Dorada

The Costa Dorada (Golden Coast) runs from Barcelona past the vibrant resort of Salou, in the south. Many holidaymakers choose this location in Spain for its outstanding beaches and modern resorts, brilliant historic towns and proximity to bustling Barcelona.

Getting there

Barcelona’s El Prat de Llobregat Airport is the usual choice of entry and offers many flight options from far afield. Reus Airport is a convenient option if you’re staying in the south of the Costa. Both airports have reliable and convenient transfers to the surrounding region. Trains go every 30 minutes from Barcelona’s airport to its city centre. The A-7/E-15 highway services the main towns along the coast, and then runs inland to Barcelona. The coastal A-16 highway also runs into Barcelona. Regular trains service the coast from Madrid’s Atocha Station, and there is a coastal line linking the main towns. Buses are another option from the capital and Barcelona, although they can be uncomfortable and unreliable.

Information on Costa Doradas key attractions

Barcelona is the big draw of the region with its splendid architecture, owing to the genius of Antonio Gaudí, and myriad of sightseeing options. Tarragona is also steeped in history; its classical ruins are renowned throughout Spain. The main beach resort is Salou, which boasts the theme park Port Aventura, marvellous Catalan-style architecture scattered among the high-rises, and great swimming and bathing. A walking tour of Barcelona should take in the stunning harbour and beach area, moving on to that great strolling boulevard, Las Ramblas, and the many surprises dreamt up by Gaudí, such as La Sagrada Familia, a massive cathedral.

Out and about

Heading inland by car, the town of Reus is famed for its traditional fiestas every June and July, its Jewish quarter, and the several museums displaying archaeological exhibits. The enchanting mountain monastery of Montserrat, west of Barcelona and accessed by cable car, is beautifully situated, drawing pilgrims to La Moreneta (the Black Virgin). Additionally, there are some lovely hidden coves along the coastal route between Salou and Barcelona.

Leisure options

Barcelona has everything from the theatre to street cafés to buzzing nightclubs, while Salous seafront promenade is loaded with great seafood restaurants. All manner of sports are available from world class golf to windsurfing, sailing, boating and fishing.

Safety

Pickpocketing can be a problem in Barcelona and especially in the more popular seaside resort towns, especially at night. Visitors are always more susceptible when in an unfamiliar environment and should remain alert. Driving and water sports are potentially dangerous and visitors should be extra vigilant. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.

Weather in Costa Dorada

The weather in the Costa Dorada region is pleasant most of the year. However, youll get the best weather between April and July. August can be quite hot, peaking at around 34C, but it can become very humid. October and November are still quite pleasant but it is starting to get a little cooler. The sun wont shine every day so you would need to be prepared for it to be overcast.
