Travel to Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is a perfect getaway for thousands of visitors who every year are constantly attracted by the variety of resorts along the coast, brilliant warm sunshine and the laid-back holiday atmosphere.

Getting there

Málaga Airport receives countless scheduled and charter flights from all over Europe. There is a very convenient electric train (every 30 minutes) running from the airport to Málaga, and as far as Fuengirola, covering the major resorts. Most holiday packages come with free transfers. By road, the coast is served by the E-15 highway from the east coast and the E-5/E-902 from Madrid. Trains arrive in Málaga all day from Madrid and Barcelona; the Talgo 200s are the fastest. Various buses leave from Madrid’s Estacion sur de Autobuses to Málaga, and local buses serve the coast every 15 minutes from Málaga’s central bus station.

Info on Costa del Sols Key attractions

Málaga is the hub of the region and the cultural capital. The city boasts great beaches; a striking cathedral (built on the site of a former mosque); and the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Public Foundation, a museum dedicated to the master painter. Torremolinos is a constant magnet for tourists, who are drawn to its party atmosphere, excellent shopping, beachfront promenades and delicious seafood.

Out and about

Easily accessed by car, Nerja, to the east of Málaga, has prehistoric caves with paintings, and a pretty whitewashed town; while the mountain town of Mijas also makes for an interesting day excursion. Heading northeast, Granada is a major tourist destination boasting the magnificent Alhambra pleasure palace, as well as spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Leisure options

As you might expect, water sports are in abundance, with the likes of windsurfing, jet-skiing and snorkelling, very popular. The waters off Almunecar, to the east of Málaga, are exceptional for scuba diving. Eateries range from simple beachside cafés to the finest of restaurants, serving up some delicious seafood. Nightlife is well advanced with a plethora of bars, pubs and discothèques.

Safety

Visitors should remain alert to the ever present pickpockets that operate throughout the Costa del Sol region, especially around the bars at night. Holidaymakers are far more susceptible in an unfamiliar environment and should take extra care when driving or taking part in water sports. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.

Weather in Costa Del Sol

The Costa del Sol is busiest in July and August and the summer can get very hot with temperatures ranging between 32 and 36C. The mediterranean coastline has plenty of sunshine during the summer months and refreshing sea breezes make for pleasant sunbathing. You can enjoy an average of 12 hours of sunshine a day and between 25-30 dry days a month.
