The Costa Blanca is a favourite location for many holidaymakers in search of plenty of sun, excellent bathing, and some historic towns spared the onslaught of the tourist hordes. The Costa Blanca is also easy to get to, which adds to its appeal.

Getting there

Valencia’s Manises Airport is just outside the city limits and is linked to Valencia by rail; while El Altet Airport is 10kms southwest of Alicante. Both airports receive scheduled and charter services from around Spain and across Europe. The A-7/E-15 European highway runs north-south through the Costa Blanca, and the E-901 (Madrid) highway connects with Valencia.

There are many highlights, depending on what you’re after. Benidorm is a lively resort with a fantastic, wide bay and a host of water sports; however, the city caters mainly to those in search of a party atmosphere. Farther south, Alicante, the provincial capital, is a lovely historic city with a laid-back Spanish feel.

Out and about

If you hire a car and explore the region, be sure to visit Javea, in the northern part of the Costa Blanca. The old town is charming, with its small plaças and web of interesting little alleys. The beach area to the east of Javea is beautiful. Farther inland you’ll find the village of Jalon in the middle of the enchanting Jalon Valley. Look out for Jalon Church and the village’s several excellent bodegas (wine cellars).

Leisure options

Leisure activities range from jet-skiing, windsurfing and fishing to golfing on some world class golf courses. All resort towns on the coast are home to a myriad of cafés, restaurants and bars, with the bulk of these concentrated behind the beach area of Benidorm.

Safety

Tourists are always more susceptible to pickpockets and road accidents, due to the relaxed holiday atmosphere and unfamiliar environment, and should always try to remain vigilant and alert, especially when driving or taking part in dangerous water sports. Visitors to Benidorm are particularly at risk from thieves, especially around the bars at night. We strongly recommend you take out adequate travel insurance for yourself and your family.

Weather in Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca is warm all year round and offers more than 320 days of sunshine a year. The summer months can be rather humid with temperatures averaging 30-31C. If you prefer mild, sunny weather the best time to visit is in the Spring. During September you can witness a spectacular light show from the electric storms. The coast is protected by mountains to the west and the warm Mediterranean Sea to the east, giving a perfect winter and summer climate.
