Slovenia, escaped the Balkan wars and is a tiny pristine haven nestled in the foothills of the Julian Alps.

Slovenia, a small Balkan country, is cradled in the Julian Alps. Having succeeded from Yugoslavia in 1991, it is enjoying some prosperity. Slovenia is home to some wonderful ski resorts, good summer-time resort lakes and historic settlements.

The countrys most significant city, Ljubljana, is notable for its hilltop castle and exquisite buildings. Slavic in character and also quite romantic, Ljubljanas old town can be discovered on foot and retains its Roman origins. There are many fine examples of grand architecture worth exploring, along with mazes of cobbled lanes plump with pavement cafés. In a gorgeous location beneath the Alps, Lake Bled is a popular European holiday destination. Crisp, cool weather and pristine natural environs make this little resort town irresistible.

Arguably the tourist gem of Slovenia is Lake Bled, which is a resort town situated beside a pretty lake under the shadow of the Julian Alps. The weather is pleasant in summer and cycling around the lake, stopping a waterfront restaurants, or even swimming out to the little island to ring the ‘lovers’ bell’ in the small chapel there, is popular. A castle sits on a precipice beside the lake. Not far from here is the ski resort of Bohinj, which offers excellent winter and summer activities in unbeatable scenery.

Eastern Slovenia is riddled with karst caves and caving (or karsting) attracts many to this region. ' '
