Information on Sicilys key attractions

Sicily has many areas of interest, including Agrigento, a tiny medieval city featuring a Romanesque Gothic cathedral. The Valley of the Temples has ruins of numerous temples and an archaeological museum.

Catania is home to two Roman amphitheatres and Ursino Castle; while Cefalu is a breathtaking seaside town nestled below Madonie Mountain and offering a beach, medieval streets and delightful restaurants.

Trapani is best known for the Annunciation Sanctuary, dating from the 14th century. The attached Pepoli Regional Museum boasts medieval and modern collections worth seeing. The nearby island of Favignana is the largest of the Egidean Islands and a famous resort.

Out and about

There is much more to see outside of Sicily’s main cities. Sciacca is quaint seaside town halfway between Marsala and Agrigento. It is best known for its gorgeous beaches and plethora of artisan shops. Porto Empedocle is a shipping town with a great beach and some ruins nearby. A mountain town, Castelbuono lies 25kms from Cefalů and is home to a castle once owned by the Ventimiglia family. Sicily’s most famous attraction is Mount Etna, offering skiing in the winter and scenic hikes through woodlands in the summer. Alcantara Gorge, north of Mount Etna, was created by volcanic activity.

Leisure options

The most relaxing way to enjoy Sicily is on the island’s many beaches. Nightlife varies depending on where you are, ranging from quiet cafés and restaurants to throbbing discos and bars.

Safety

Tourists can be susceptible to potential hazards when travelling to an unfamiliar environment. Holidaymakers should be wary of pickpockets, especially at night. Outdoor activities and driving can place you at greater risk of having an accident. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in problematic bookings. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you or your family when travelling to Sicily.

Weather in Sicily

During the winter the average temperature is about 7C, with colder temperatures in the middle of the island. During Spring the average is 13-14C with brief periods of rain. Average temperatures in Summer are from 27-30C. Sunshine hours average four to five hours a day in winter and up to eleven hours in summer.
