A landscape of opposites, the southern half of Serbia is mountains and dense forest, while the north is dominated by flat, fertile farmland.Belgrade, the capital city, is adorned with bombed ruins of its past; however, sights such as the Yugoslav Parliament, Republike Square, St Alexander Nevsky Church and the Palace of Princess Ljubica (1831), give visitors a chance to see how things once were. Kalemegdan Citadel looms over the old town. The National Museum has extensive exhibits on everything from ancient artefacts to Picasso; while Serbian folkloric costumes can be viewed at the Ethnographical Museum. Belgrades bustling centre is the Kneza Mihaila, a café-lined pedestrian boulevard. Montenegro is touted as the ‘Jewel of Europe’, and the gateway to the region is Bar, a port city. Holidaymakers to the area especially enjoy the beautiful Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans and a major bird sanctuary. Kotor is a premier resort town and medieval walled city situated at the head of southern Europes deepest fjord and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Also of interest in Montenegro is Budva, built by the Venetians in the Middle Ages. It is the region’s leading beach resort and boasts a scenic backdrop of high coastal mountains. The old town here collapsed in a 1979 earthquake and has been entirely rebuilt as a tourist attraction, complete with faithful copies of a fortress and churches. Mongren Beach, 500m north, is especially lovely. Cetinje was at one time the capital of Montenegro. The former palace here now serves as the State Museum. The Cetinje Monastery, founded in 1484 and rebuilt in 1785, has a treasury of artefacts and is well worth a visit. Mount Lovcen is 20kms from the city and is in a national park. Durmitor National Park is close to Montenegros border with Bosnia. Here, the stunning Tara Canyon is well worth the journey. It is 100kms long and 1,067m deep. The Tara River flows through the canyon and provides good rafting. Hiking in the region is sublime and there are 18 mountain lakes to cool you off. To the east of the park, is Zabljak, Montenegros best ski resort. ' ' |
