The world’s largest country, Russia is home to countless cultural treasures that have withstood the tribulations of its tumultuous history. Russia contains the planets longest railroads, charming beach resorts on the Black Sea and famous icons such as the Kremlin. The warmth of the people and the beautiful – though harsh – landscapes make this an exciting travel destination. Moscow, the famous capital of Russia, boasts a fascinating history shaped by the likes of Ivan the Terrible, Stalin, Napoleon, Lenin, Khrushchev and Gorbachev. This cosmopolitan city pulsates around the clock with a busy entertainment and dining scene after-hours and an equally bustling day presence around the financial markets. Stalins neo-Gothic skyscrapers and the imposing Kremlin, as well as the famous Red Square, are just a few of the sights you won’t want to miss. Known as the ‘Venice of the North’, St Petersburg is home to palace-lined waterways. The highlight of the city, the Winter Palace, overlooking the Neva River, houses the Hermitage Museum. This museum boasts an endless collection of international masterpieces. Equally impressive are the opulent royal estates that are sprinkled around the surrounding forests. Less than 200kms south of St Petersburg, Novgorod dates from the 9th century. The Kremlin there hosts the Byzantine Cathedral of St Sophia, the Millennium of Russia Monument, the Chamber of Facets and the fascinating Museum of History & Art. Another worthwhile destination, Sochi has a scenic location backed by the Caucasus Mountains. Its adjoining resort complex of Dagomys is extremely popular. The River Volga is Europe’s longest (3,700m) and extends from Yaroslavl, north of Moscow, all the way down to Volgograd, from where a tributary runs off to the Caspian Sea. A cruise down the river will take in the towns of Kazan, one of the oldest Tatar cities in Russia, and Lenins birthplace, Ulyanovsk. Volgograd, previously known as Stalingrad, is best known for the battle fought here during WWII. The city has since been re-built basically from scratch, and contains museums and monuments which serve as reminders. Those that have the opportunity should take a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The six-day, 9,446-kilometre journey is the best way to see Russia. You will go from Moscow to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast, passing such delights as Siberias Lake Baikal, a massive waterway that is home to the worlds only freshwater seal. ' ' |
