Mutrah overlooks the city, while Jalali and Mirani protect the harbour entrance.Other attractions in Muscat are the aquarium, the Oman Museum, the National Museum, and the Sultans Armed Forces Museum, located in the Bait al-Falaj fort. For a stunning view of the city, climb the restored Mutrah watchtower. Most of Oman’s main towns and attractions are predictably spread along its coast. In the south, Salalah makes an ideal base from which to explore the ruins of Al-Balid, the site of the ancient city of Zafar, and the beaches of Mughsail. Centrally located, the popular town of Sur charms tourists with its great beaches, massive forts, excellent Marine Museum and a dhow shipyard where traditional fishing vessels are built. Take your time exploring the northern Batinah coast, taking in the sights of Barka and Sohar, an impressive fort that Sinbad the sailor calls home. Inland is Nakhal, another magnificent fort situated near a picturesque oasis. One hundred and seventy-five kilometres southwest of Muscat, is Rustaq, the site of Oman’s former capital. Rustaq Fort is one of the oldest forts in Oman, originally constructed on Persian ruins in the 13th century. If you have had your fill of forts, the wild Musandam Peninsula offers a change of scenery. Separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates, the peninsula features a stunning coastline, jagged cliffs, charming villages and spectacular scenic roads.
