The country also has some good shopping areas and gourmet dining. The cultural melting pot of Amsterdam is famed for its 17th century canals and medieval buildings, and is best explored by bicycle. Famed attractions include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Begijnhof is a square surrounded by ancient, beautiful buildings. The Anne Frank House definitely should not be missed. The famous red light district and the many ‘coffee shops’ are intriguing. The third largest city in the nation is The Hague, home to the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and the States-General (parliament), as well as most foreign embassies. The regal mansions, palatial embassies and prestigious art galleries are all worth seeing. The cosmopolitan city of Rotterdam is the world’s largest port. It boasts modern architecture, along with plenty of attractions, festivals and museums. The southernmost city in the Netherlands, Maastricht, is a fortified city of Roman origin. There are plenty of adventurous activities here, with a landscape of caves, tunnels and grottos interspersed with quality museums and ancient basilicas. The south of the Netherlands is particularly scenic, with sea views contrasting against farmland, and hills beside forestland. The coast of Zeeland and its hinterland are worth seeing anytime of the year. Middelburg, the capital, has at least 1,100 monuments. Popular daytrips from Amsterdam, Rotterdam or the Hague are Delft – from wherer the famous blue and white porcelain comes from, and today it remains a fine example of an untainted small dutch town; and Madurodam – which is a favourite among families on account of its working scale model of Dtuch town. The flower markets are another famous venue which attract busloads of tourists. More than half of Holland lies below sea level and is kept from flooding by an imaginative system of dykes, canals, mills, lochs and dams. The tiny towns and villages just outside Amsterdam offer a rich tradition, with locals wearing traditional costume and wooden shoes. The typical Dutch landscape is scenic, with millions of blooming tulips, windmills and dykes in the background.
