Its red-toned sand and rocks stretch endlessly into the distance, creating a strange, stark beauty and a sense of unlimited space.Namibia’s tourism has been steadily on the increase since its independence from South Africa in 1991. The country has much to offer visitors, including pristine natural landscapes and abundant animal life. Etosha National Park is one of Namibia’s most popular attractions, boasting elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals that roam freely through the expansive savannah plains. Namibia was formerly a German colony, and Windhoek is permeated with old neo-Gothic German buildings. The country’s fascinating history is documented in exhibits at the white-walled Alte Feste, an old fort that has been converted into a museum. Swakopmund, a curious and delightful coastal town with a distinctly German flavour, is another much visited destination. Situated amid undulating sand dunes, this urban centre is just a short walk away from the beach, and is dotted with colonial buildings selling German food specialities. North of Swakopmund is the infamous Skeleton Coast, a lonely wilderness of windswept sands and crashing ocean, where numerous ships have met an untimely end against the unforgiving coastline. Moving inland from Swakopmund, visitors can view the strikingly beautiful dunes of Sossusvlei, mammoth bodies of pink sand that stretch as far as the eyes can see. Leisure options abound in Namibia, and are focused on its superb natural environment. Travellers can enjoy game-viewing, bird-watching, fishing, diving and hiking in the magnificent, unspoilt areas that make up so much of the country.
