As one of the wealthiest countries in the region, the diverse culture incorporates a complex fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, European and indigenous traditions. The north of the Malaysian peninsula, home to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and the tropical beaches and islands around Langkawi, is the most popular destination for most visitors. Those who venture farther afield, to the island of Borneo, are rewarded with fascinating natural and ethnic attractions. Over the last century, Kuala Lumpur has grown into a modern, bustling city of almost two million inhabitants. Situated on the convergence of the Kelang and Gombak rivers, Kuala Lumpur retains much of the character of its colonial past. The twin Petronas Towers skyscraper, the second tallest building in the world, dominates the city skyline. To the southeast of Merdeka square, lie the banking district and China Town, while farther to the west is the ‘green belt’, which houses the Lake Gardens. The state of Melaka (Malacca), founded by a fleeing prince from Sumatra in 14th century, was once a major trading port. Here the visitor will find an unusual blend of Chinese, Dutch, Portuguese and British influences. Penang is an island off peninsular Malaysias northwestern coast. The main city of Georgetown is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia, and is one of the countrys premier seaside resort areas. The Cameron Highlands are a number of spectacular high-altitude hill stations located in the centre of peninsular Malaysia, where locals and visitors come to escape the frenetic pace and sweltering humidity of the cities. Tioman Island lies off the eastern coast of peninsula Malaysia in the South China Sea. It boasts beautiful beaches, abundant marine life, jungle highlands, crystal-clear streams, and the dramatic peaks of Batu Sirau and Nenek Semukut.
